An IKEA BEKVÄM Spice Rack Fixes a Bathroom’s Storage Issues | Apartment Therapy

Two small-space dwellers, Toronto's Katie Nielsen and Apartment Therapy contributor Trisha Sprouse, independently solved cramped bathroom storage by mounting IKEA's BEKVÄM spice rack on the wall. Katie, sharing 430 square feet with her fiancé, uses it to keep frequently used items like facial pads, tweezers, and nail trimmers within reach and easy for guests to find. Trisha had already used one as a kid's bookshelf, and the rail keeps products from slipping off. The piece also notes it can be installed on tiled walls, though the screws are sold separately.

This Tiny Home Wraps Its Living Room in Glass and Keeps the Main Bedroom Downstairs - Yanko Design

Vagabond Haven's Leah is a 12 by 3.45 meter modular tiny home (about 52 square meters including a loft) that sleeps four, with a glazed living area, a separate downstairs bedroom and bathroom, and a low-ceilinged loft reached by stairs. It's a wheel-less timber-on-steel-chassis build that needs a low-bed truck and crane for delivery, and it's well insulated with 20 cm of mineral wool and triple glazing. The piece's main point is that putting daily living and the main bedroom on the ground floor makes the loft optional, and it flags that the $66,300 unfurnished price (versus $77,500 furnished or $93,100 off-grid, excluding VAT) doesn't cover the furnished interior shown in the illustrations.

IKEA

GULDDRAGARE storage combination, beige/with 4 doors with shelves, 623/4x143/8x847/8" - IKEA

This is an IKEA product page for the GULDDRAGARE storage system, a traditional-style cabinet with panel doors below and open shelves above, built from fiberboard and particleboard with solid ash legs. The one substantive piece of content is a customer review warning that it wobbles badly side to side unless anchored to the wall, which most buyers won't do, so many will be returned. The reviewer's fix is to add metal cross supports from the Ivar cabinet at the door level, where they stay hidden when the doors are closed, and to consider bracing the visible upper section too.

What’s Downshifting? The Trend That’s Helping Homeowners Do More With Less

Downshifting is presented as a way for homeowners to cut spending, clutter, and upkeep without necessarily moving, which is what separates it from downsizing. It draws on David Holmgren's definition of a conscious shift toward less consumption, complexity, and status seeking, and suggests starting small: clearing storage-filled spaces, borrowing tools, repairing instead of replacing, growing some vegetables, or trimming utility bills. The piece also tempers the savings pitch, noting that a smaller home doesn't automatically mean smaller bills, and that tradeoffs like family space, longer commutes, and the time DIY work takes can offset the benefits.

Homegrown Limoncello: Preserving a Precious Meyer Lemon Crop

The author shares a recipe for homemade limoncello made from homegrown Meyer lemons, explaining the process of infusing lemon zest in vodka for two weeks before mixing with a simple sugar syrup. Beyond the recipe itself, she discusses the pleasures of growing your own citrus—knowing exactly what chemicals (or lack thereof) touch the fruit—and the seasonal timing of making the liqueur now, in winter citrus season, to enjoy its frozen, digestif-like sips months later in summer.

The 100 Best American-Made Products

InsideHook curates a list of 100 American-made products across gear, style, home, kitchen, and grooming categories, taking a generous approach to what qualifies as "made in America" by including items where substantial American manufacturing and ingenuity are involved, even if some international components are necessary. Rather than focusing on strict FTC compliance, the editors emphasize celebrating the specific craftspeople and small manufacturers behind these goods—from cast iron skillets hand-signed by blacksmiths to vertically integrated woolen mills—arguing that what makes these products worth buying is not patriotic labeling but their genuine quality and the dedication of American makers.

4 smart home sensors you should put in your basement, crawl space, and attic

How-To Geek runs down four sensor types worth tucking into a home's neglected corners: water leak detectors near pipes and in basements/attics (paired ideally with an auto shut-off valve), humidity sensors to catch mold-prone dampness before it spreads, temperature sensors to expose poorly insulated areas prone to frozen pipes, and combined infrared/mmWave presence sensors for automating lights and catching unwelcome critters in attics or crawlspaces. It's a practical shopping-and-placement guide, naming specific products like the IKEA Klippbok, Aqara hygrometer, IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE, and Everything Presence One, with a closing reminder to keep batteries fresh since these devices are only useful when powered.

I Left Baking Soda on Tile Grout Overnight and Didn’t Expect This

Baking soda works on grout not through scrubbing force but through overnight chemical action that neutralizes trapped oils, soaps, and acids causing discoloration and odor. Applied as a paste and left untouched until morning, it draws residue from pores so it releases with a single wipe, and the grout then resists moisture absorption and dirt accumulation in ways that previous scrubbing methods never achieved. The key insight is that time, not friction, allows baking soda to alter the grout's surface environment permanently rather than just masking stains temporarily.

I Tried Cleaning My Kitchen With Lemon and Didn’t Expect It To Work This Well

A hands-on test of lemon juice as a vinegar alternative across four kitchen tasks: it dissolved hard-water rings on granite, freshened wooden boards without deep-sanitizing them, and completely neutralized microwave odors via a boiled lemon-water steam trick, but left glasses streaky compared to standard cleaner. The takeaway is that lemon earns a permanent spot as a light, low-odor touch-up tool rather than a full cleaner replacement—worth keeping for the microwave trick alone.

I Left Vinegar to Work on These 11 Cleaning Tasks Around My Home

A hands-on test log of white vinegar as an all-purpose cleaner, going through a dozen specific household applications—coffee makers, windows, dishwashers, drains, shower heads, washing machines—and reporting which ones actually produced visible results rather than just repeating the usual folk claims. The one caveat worth remembering is to skip natural stone surfaces since the acidity degrades sealant, and the citrus-infused vinegar variant is a nice fix for the smell issue. Worth keeping as a practical checklist rather than a general endorsement piece.

IKEA Shoppers Discovered a Different Use for This Bamboo Drying Rack

A French home-organizing creator repurposed IKEA's OSTBIT bamboo dish-drying rack—normally a countertop tool for air-drying plates and glasses—as a vertical, wall-mounted holder for rolled hand towels. Using adhesive mounting strips instead of drilling, she stuck the rack beside her bathroom mirror, turning its pegs into slots for neatly rolled towels, giving a boutique-hotel look with a renter-friendly, no-tools installation. It's a handy example of buying a product for one IKEA-catalog purpose and finding a smarter, better one.

Primary Closet Organization for Every Season's Wardrobe

The author describes redesigning her primary closet at Casa Zuma in Malibu after initially planning it for a vacation home, then moving there full-time. She worked with California Closets to maximize a modest footprint by inventorying her actual wardrobe (editing down 75%), using floor-to-ceiling storage, incorporating deep drawers and double hanging rods where most useful, adding integrated LED lighting, and prioritizing a vanity as a focal point for her morning routine. The design approach prioritizes how the space functions and feels rather than maximizing storage capacity, creating an organized, calm room that connects visually to the adjoining primary bathroom.

Your TV’s “Filmmaker Mode” still isn’t the best setting for movies—here’s what I do instead

This piece argues that Filmmaker Mode, though considered the gold standard for TV picture settings, looks too dim and flat in an ordinary lit living room, and offers a step-by-step way to rebuild it from Cinema or Movie presets. The author walks through adjusting color temperature toward D65, raising backlight and changing gamma to recover shadow detail, tuning motion smoothing to fix panning stutter on fast OLED panels, and disabling enhancers and noise reduction that distort the director's intended look.

What to Do if Your Home Has Little or No Closet Space

This article provides 14 practical storage solutions for older homes with limited closet space, ranging from traditional furniture like armoires to modern alternatives such as portable closets and wall-mounted systems. The suggestions emphasize both maximizing existing closet space through organizational tools and creating new storage through repurposed rooms, built-in structures, and creative use of often-overlooked areas like door backs and under-stair spaces. The piece also recommends decluttering regularly and storing seasonal items off-site to manage the reality that old homes require more intentional storage strategies than modern houses with built-in closets.

How to Spot Valuable Furniture at the Thrift Store

The author shares four criteria for identifying valuable furniture at thrift stores: looking for maker's marks that reveal a piece's origin and market value, spotting dovetail joinery (a durable centuries-old woodworking technique visible on drawer corners and edges), confirming solid wood construction by tracing grain patterns and weight, and assessing structural integrity to ensure the piece can withstand everyday use. These practical evaluation methods, drawn from the author's decade of decorating with secondhand furniture, help distinguish underpriced quality pieces from mass-produced items that will quickly deteriorate.
