Opera Air gets a minimalist makeover for distraction-free browsing - 9to5Mac

Opera's relaunch of Opera Air, a browser pitched as built around mindfulness, adds a redesigned interface with optional tools, new wallpapers that adapt to light and dark themes, a built-in ad blocker and free VPN, and expanded Soundscapes and break-reminder features with breathing exercises and neck stretches. The piece is essentially a product announcement that presents these changes as a push toward distraction-free browsing, with the company's own framing quoted throughout. Little in it is independent analysis; its main value is as a record of exactly which features the update introduced and how Opera positioned them.

ContextSnap

ContextSnap is a Windows and macOS utility that, when you press a shortcut, collects the visible text of your active window, open app names, basic Git state, and system details into a redacted Markdown snapshot on your clipboard for pasting into an AI assistant. The page stresses that it runs only on demand, processes everything locally, keeps no history, and redacts secrets by pattern, while warning that the redaction is imperfect and window titles or file names can still leak what you are working on. It is worth keeping as a concrete example of a privacy-conscious "context capture" tool, with its explicit scope limits and its unsigned-build and checksum caveats spelled out.

Want to see something crazy? Open this link on your phone with WiFi turned off.

US telecommunications companies grant third-party services like Danal and Payfone direct access to sensitive customer data—including home addresses, phone numbers, and real-time cell tower location data—through enterprise APIs ostensibly designed for fraud detection. These services can look up this information using only a mobile phone's IP address, with minimal consent requirements and likely inadequate oversight, enabling potential tracking or de-anonymization of nearly any American cell phone user without meaningful safeguards or warrant requirements. The article demonstrates working demos of these capabilities and notes that major carriers' opt-out mechanisms appear ineffective at preventing such access.

omlahore/RemoveMacAI: Debloat macOS: turn off Apple Intelligence, analytics, ads and pop-ups. A native app and CLI, and every change can be undone.

RemoveMacAI is a tool that lets users selectively disable Apple Intelligence features, analytics, ads, and various system annoyances on macOS while preserving changes that can be undone. It offers both a graphical app and command-line interface with preset configurations (Recommended and Maximum Privacy) that show users exactly what will change before applying modifications. The tool also recovers disk space by removing AI models, old installers, and cached files, and can export configuration profiles for enterprise deployment via MDM systems.

A stranger can learn a lot about you in 5 minutes online - how to check and delete it ASAP - ZDNET

The article demonstrates how easily strangers can compile detailed personal profiles in minutes using freely available tools—including basic Google searches, people-finder websites like Whitepages, reverse image searches, social media scanning, and AI platforms like ChatGPT. It then provides practical steps for reducing your digital footprint, such as privatizing social media accounts, using Google's Results About You tool, removing data through broker removal services, and checking Have I Been Pwned to identify exposed passwords from data breaches.

How-To Geek

These 5 legendary free, open-source apps are better than their expensive paid alternatives

This How-To Geek piece by Dibakar Ghosh argues that free and open-source software has matured enough to beat paid alternatives, and it makes the case through five picks: Nextcloud, Blender, OBS Studio, Bitwarden, and Super Productivity. Each entry explains why its free version is competitive, from Nextcloud's self-hosted cloud replacement to Blender's use in the Oscar-winning film Flow. The piece is worth keeping as a practical shortlist of mature FOSS tools that could replace recurring subscriptions, with honest caveats such as Nextcloud's bring-your-own-storage requirement and Bitwarden's freemium limits.

My morning RSS digest now runs on local AI, and I'll never go back to NotebookLM

The author built a local AI-powered RSS reader that automatically summarizes feeds using Gemma 4 running on Ollama, avoiding cloud services like NotebookLM while removing manual copy-paste steps and tier limits. The setup prioritizes privacy by processing everything locally, allows scheduled digest generation throughout the day, and can handle unlimited RSS sources, though it accepts the trade-off that smaller open-weight models won't match frontier AI reasoning capabilities. He plans to integrate it with his existing Discord bot and voice assistant to enable audio briefings and interactive questioning about the digests.

Stop using the same DNS for every device (do this instead to block ads and boost speeds)

Argues against using a single DNS provider for every device on a home network, instead recommending a tiered approach: ad/tracking-blocking resolvers like NextDNS or AdGuard for smart TVs, family-filtering DNS like OpenDNS FamilyShield for kids' devices, performance-first options like Cloudflare or Quad9 for phones/laptops, and a self-hosted sinkhole (Pi-hole/AdGuard Home) to quarantine chatty, insecure IoT gadgets. It's worth keeping as a practical, device-by-device DNS configuration guide rather than a generic "switch your DNS" tip, including caveats about devices bypassing custom DNS and restrictive filters occasionally blocking legitimate work sites.

5 free fixes that make every smart TV perform like a premium model

This How-To Geek piece runs through five quick fixes for new smart TVs whose factory defaults prioritize showroom appeal and data collection over actual viewing quality: disabling motion smoothing (the "soap opera effect") by switching to Filmmaker/Cinema Mode, swapping Wi-Fi for a wired Ethernet connection to cut buffering, recalibrating oversaturated Vivid/Dynamic picture presets, and turning off Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) — the tracking feature that fingerprints what's on-screen up to twice a second and sells viewing profiles to data brokers, hidden under brand-specific names like Samsung's Viewing Information Services or LG's Live Plus. It closes with a tip on setting up manufacturer remote apps (SmartThings, LG ThinQ, etc.) as a faster, Wi-Fi-based backup to physical remotes. Worth keeping as a practical, brand-agnostic checklist for de-junking a new TV in a few minutes.

I'll Never Use Chrome Again: These 5 Browsers Are Worth The Switch

This roundup profiles five Chrome alternatives for readers frustrated by resource hogging and privacy concerns, matching each to a different user type: Vivaldi for power users who want granular customization, Opera for mainstream users wanting an easy, feature-packed AI-friendly option, Firefox for its efficiency and continued uBlock Origin support post-Manifest V3, Orion for Mac users wanting Safari's efficiency without its feature gaps, and SigmaOS for those craving a reimagined, visually distinctive browsing experience. The piece leans on benchmarks (RAM/energy use) and specific feature comparisons rather than generic praise, making it a practical reference for actually switching rather than just complaining about Chrome.

Palantir Employees Are Starting to Wonder if They’re the Bad Guys

Palantir employees are increasingly breaking with the company's culture of internal debate to openly question leadership over its deepening ties to Trump-era immigration enforcement and military operations, including ICE deportation work, alleged Maven surveillance involvement in a deadly Iranian strike, and CEO Alex Karp's public rhetoric on AI and voters. WIRED documents a year of escalating internal Slack revolts, deleted message logs, contentious AMAs with privacy staff, and a fascism-tinged company "manifesto" that together suggest a genuine identity crisis at a firm founded partly to prevent post-9/11 civil-liberties abuses. Worth keeping as a granular, sourced account of how a secretive, non-disparagement-bound workforce is nonetheless cracking under Karp's unapologetic embrace of controversy.

I changed 13 settings on my TV to dramatically improve its performance - here's how

Modern smart TVs function as full computers with operating systems and internet connections, requiring optimization beyond basic use. The article provides thirteen practical adjustments—from disabling motion smoothing and switching to filmmaker picture modes, to clearing cache, updating software, and disabling tracking features—that can significantly improve picture quality, performance, security, and privacy. For best results, the author recommends using external streaming devices like Roku, enabling wired Ethernet connections, and periodically cold-booting the TV, while noting that privacy controls and accessibility features can be enabled with minimal trade-offs to functionality.

Is There Anything You Can Do About Hidden Cameras at Your Airbnb?

CNN's investigation found that Airbnb receives tens of thousands of reports about hidden cameras in listings but has done little to address the problem, partly because the company owns no properties and thus faces minimal legal accountability. Although Airbnb banned indoor cameras globally in March 2024, the company quickly settles lawsuits with victims under non-disclosure agreements, rarely involves law enforcement, and provides no transparency about how it enforces the policy. Guests are left to conduct their own searches for cameras upon arrival, with no foolproof method available to ensure their privacy.

Cable Flys Can Carve Out Your Chest Faster Than Presses. Are You Using Them Right? — Men’s Health

While heavy pressing builds overall chest size and strength, cable chest flys are the superior exercise for carving definition and detail in the pecs, particularly as a finishing move. The key to maximizing the cable fly involves precise positioning—cables set just above shoulder height, a light grip near the base of your palm, and continuous shoulder blade engagement—combined with specific movement cues like stopping before a full crossover and leading with your pinkies to maximize the chest squeeze.
